A section of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County will be named after a Virginia State Trooper.
A ceremony is scheduled for this morning in Lexington to honor Officer Jerry Hines. Hines was 48 years old when he was shot and killed in February of 1989, during a traffic stop along I-81 near the I-64 interchange.
Hines was killed by Dennis Eaton, of Mount Jackson, who had already shot and killed two people when Hines pulle him over. Another triffic stop near Salem led Eaton to kill his girlfriend. He was eventually taken into custody, sentenced to death and executed in 1998.
